Africa Men’s Youth Handball Championship: Nigeria U-18 Boys begin two-match fight for World Championship ticket

Nigeria’s U-18 Men’s Handball team will begin a crucial two-match battle for a place at the 2027 IHF Under-19 World Championship when they face hosts Côte d’Ivoire on Monday.

The 5th–8th placement encounter is scheduled for 2 p.m. Nigerian time at the Palais des Sports in Abidjan, with Nigeria needing victory to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Coach Abdulhakim Yakubu’s side entered the placement stage after suffering a heavy quarter-final defeat to Egypt, ending their hopes of competing for the championship title.

Their attention has now shifted to securing the continent’s final ticket to the 2027 IHF Under-19 World Championship.

Africa has five qualification slots for the global tournament, meaning Nigeria must finish fifth at the 22nd Africa Men’s Youth Handball Championship.

To achieve that, the Nigerian team must first overcome Côte d’Ivoire before facing either Cameroon or Rwanda in another decisive placement match.

A second victory would secure fifth position and, consequently, Nigeria’s ticket to the World Championship.

The stakes are therefore clear for the young Nigerians: two wins from their remaining placement matches will be enough to turn their disappointment in the quarter-finals into a World Championship qualification.

The first hurdle, however, is a Côte d’Ivoire side determined to make home advantage count in Abidjan.
