Africa Aquatics Zone 2: Nigeria’s Swimmers Make Early Medal Statement in Dakar

Team Nigeria announced its presence at the 2026 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Junior and Senior Swimming Championship in Dakar, Senegal, with an impressive eight-medal haul on the opening day.

The Nigerian swimmers finished Day One second on the medal table behind hosts Senegal after securing two gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

Aidan Dumuje and India Brown led Nigeria’s charge, winning gold medals in their respective 100-metre freestyle events to provide a bright start for the contingent.

The silver-medal performances also came in several competitive events, with Omolola Akinsanmi, Demilade Ayemowa and Tofunmi Ibidapo among the Nigerian swimmers who contributed to the medal haul.

Nigeria further added two bronze medals in the boys’ and girls’ 200-metre breaststroke events, as well as the junior mixed relay.

The opening-day performance has placed Nigeria in a strong position on the medal table and raised expectations for more podium finishes as the championship progresses.

With several events still to be contested in Dakar, the Nigerian contingent will be hoping to build on its impressive start and finish the competition with an even richer medal haul.

The 2026 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Junior and Senior Swimming Championship continues with swimmers from across the region battling for honours in the junior and senior categories.
