Afghanistan Stuns New Zealand with 84-Run Victory at T20 World Cup

Posted : 08 June 2024

Afghanistan dominated New Zealand with an 84-run victory in Guyana, securing their second consecutive win in the T20 World Cup. Rahmanullah Gurbaz led the charge with a powerful 80 off 56 balls, supported by Ibrahim Zadran's steady 44 off 41 deliveries, guiding Afghanistan to a total of 159-6.

New Zealand, the 2021 runners-up, struggled in their response and were bowled out for a mere 75 in 15.2 overs, suffering their first T20 international defeat to Afghanistan. Afghanistan's captain, Rashid Khan, hailed the performance as one of their best in T20 cricket against a formidable team like New Zealand.

Left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi and skipper Rashid Khan both took 4-17, dismantling New Zealand's batting lineup. Only two New Zealand batsmen managed to reach double figures, with Glenn Phillips scoring the highest with 18 runs. This emphatic win placed Afghanistan at the top of Group C, while New Zealand fell to the bottom, trailing Papua New Guinea on net run-rate.

In another match, Bangladesh began their tournament campaign with a narrow two-wicket win over Sri Lanka. Pathum Nissanka's 47 off 48 balls helped Sri Lanka set a target of 124-9. Despite an early collapse to 28-3, Bangladesh's Towhid Hridoy and Litton Das steered their team to victory with scores of 40 and 36, respectively. This defeat left Sri Lanka at the bottom of Group D after their second consecutive loss.
