Adama, Ebingha Lead Nigeria's Charge into Commonwealth Games Swimming Semi-Finals

Team Nigeria enjoyed another positive outing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday, with swimmers Abduljabar Adama and Colins Obi Ebingha securing places in the men's 50m butterfly semi-finals to boost the country's hopes in the pool.

Adama finished 12th overall in the heats after clocking 23.99 seconds, while Ebingha followed closely in 13th with a time of 24.01 seconds as both advanced to the evening semi-finals.

However, Dorcas Oka's campaign in the women's 50m freestyle ended in the heats after she failed to finish among the 16 qualifiers for the semi-finals.

Nigeria also recorded encouraging performances on the athletics track.

Patience Okon-George qualified for the women's 400m semi-finals after placing fourth in her heat in 53.27 seconds, while Esther Elo Joseph finished third in her heat with a time of 52.82 seconds to also progress.

The duo will be joined in the semi-finals by fellow Nigerian Ella Onojuvwevwo as the country maintains a strong presence in the event.

In the men's 400m, Edidiong Udo delivered one of Nigeria's standout performances of the morning, winning his heat in 45.73 seconds to qualify comfortably for the semi-finals.

In weightlifting, Ruth Ayodele remained in contention for a medal in the women's 63kg event after posting a best lift of 88kg in the snatch, with the clean and jerk session still to determine the final standings.

Team Nigeria will continue its campaign with athletes scheduled to compete in athletics, swimming, weightlifting, boxing, and wheelchair basketball as the hunt for more Commonwealth Games medals continues.

With several athletes advancing across multiple disciplines, Nigeria remains well-positioned to challenge for additional medals as competition intensifies in Glasgow.
