Abuja to Host North Central National Division One Handball Qualifiers

The race for promotion to Nigeria’s top-flight handball league will begin in Abuja next month as teams from seven North Central states and the Federal Capital Territory prepare for the 2026 National/Zonal Division One Handball League.

The North Central zonal competition is scheduled for Sept. 23 to Oct. 1 at the Indoor Sports Hall, Package ‘B’, MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Teams from Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Plateau, Niger, Kwara and the FCT are expected to compete for the two qualification tickets available from the zone for the final phase of the National Division One League.

The tournament is being organised by the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), in collaboration with the office of its North Central Zonal Representative, Jibril Ojih Saidu.

According to the organisers, participating teams will arrive in Abuja on Sept. 23, with matches scheduled to take place from Sept. 24 to 30. Departure is fixed for Oct. 1.

Each participating team will be allowed a maximum delegation of 22 people, comprising 18 players and four officials.

The Abuja tournament forms part of a nationwide zonal qualification process designed to identify the strongest Division One teams for the national finals.

At the end of the zonal phase, the top two teams from each zone will progress to the final stage of the National Division One League.

Beyond qualification for the national competition, the tournament offers clubs an opportunity to take a significant step towards Premier League football, with the top two teams in the final phase earning promotion to the Handball Premier League.

The format is expected to create a broader competitive pathway for clubs outside the top flight while encouraging greater participation and helping to strengthen handball development across Nigeria’s regions.

With two qualification places at stake, the North Central competition is set to provide an early test of the ambitions of emerging handball clubs seeking to establish themselves at the national level.
