Abuja Set for Cycling Showdown as National Trials Begin May 9

Posted : 07 April 2026

Nigeria’s cycling calendar is shifting into high gear as the National Track Championship, scheduled to begin on May 9 in Abuja, takes center stage as a decisive selection event for upcoming continental competitions.

Rather than just another domestic contest, this championship will serve as the primary platform for identifying riders to represent the country at the 2026 Confederation of African Cycling (CAC) African Track and Para-Track Championships, also billed to hold in the nation’s capital.

The events will run in two phases at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome, with Para-Track cyclists opening the competition from May 9–11, before the elite track riders take over from May 13–17.

According to Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN) Technical Director, Bashir Mohammed, the championship marks a crucial evaluation window. Athletes will undergo detailed performance assessments, with selections based strictly on merit and competitive output.

With Nigeria playing host to the rest of the continent, both the National Sports Commission (NSC) and CFN are placing strong emphasis on preparation, aiming to assemble a formidable squad capable of delivering on home soil.

As anticipation builds, the championship is expected to not only showcase the country’s finest cycling talents but also set the tone for Nigeria’s campaign at the African stage.

The upcoming trials at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium represent a vital step for Nigerian cyclists aiming for continental glory. By focusing on merit-based selection, the CFN ensures that the most prepared athletes will compete at the African Championships. This event solidifies Abuja's role as a central hub for high-stakes cycling in Africa.
