Abuja hosts Para Powerlifting showdown as over 100 lifters chase N5.4m prize pool

Posted : 03 May 2026

Nigeria’s para powerlifting scene takes center stage in Abuja as over 100 athletes converge for a fiercely competitive championship offering a total prize purse of N5.4 million.

Rather than just a showcase of strength, the Kingsley Awodi Para Powerlifting Open Championship has become a crucial battleground for national ranking points, with lifters competing across 20 weight categories for both prestige and financial reward.

Each division presents a full podium incentive structure, with champions earning N100,000, while second and third-place finishers pocket N70,000 and N50,000 respectively. Athletes finishing fourth to sixth are also rewarded, ensuring broader financial inclusion and motivation across the field.

The competition, which runs from May 1 to May 3, began with athlete arrivals and a technical meeting aimed at standardizing officiating and performance benchmarks. Since then, the focus has shifted fully to the lifting arena, where Nigeria’s depth in para powerlifting is on full display.

Backed by philanthropist Kingsley Awodi, the championship reflects a growing shift toward structured support for para athletes in Nigeria—providing not just exposure, but tangible earnings and competitive consistency.

With Nigeria already established as a dominant force globally in para powerlifting, events like this serve as a pipeline for grooming future international medalists while sustaining the momentum of established stars.

As the final lifts approach, the championship is not only rewarding excellence but also reinforcing the importance of investment and visibility in para sports across the country. This tournament highlights the immense talent within the Nigerian para-athletic community and the vital role of private sponsorship in fostering growth. The success of the Abuja showdown marks a significant step forward in professionalizing the sport and securing a bright future for its competitors.
