Abuja Hosts 14th Korean Ambassador’s Cup as Para-Taekwondo Classification Begins

Posted : 22 October 2026

Abuja will host the 14th Korean Ambassador’s Cup Taekwondo Championship, with activities beginning on Thursday, October 22, ahead of the main competition on Friday, October 23. The event will bring athletes together at the MKO Abiola National Stadium and MO Arena in Nigeria’s capital.

The championship is organised under the leadership of South Korean Ambassador to Nigeria, Yo-an Jeong, in collaboration with the Taekwondo Federation of Nigeria (TFN). It is expected to attract competitors from different categories and provide a platform for athletes to demonstrate their skills.

TFN President Tayo Popoola said preparations had reached an advanced stage. He also disclosed that registration had attracted such a strong response that the federation had to close entries ahead of the competition.

Popoola expressed confidence in the arrangements and acknowledged the support of the National Sports Commission (NSC), led by Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director General Bukola Olopade.

The opening day's activities will focus on the classification of para-taekwondo athletes preparing for the World Para Taekwondo Championships. World Taekwondo officials will oversee the process to assess athletes and determine their appropriate competition categories.

The classification process is important in para-taekwondo because it groups athletes according to the type and severity of their impairments. This helps promote fair competition and ensures that athletes compete under the appropriate classifications.

The championship will also feature the Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Demonstration Team from South Korea. The team's appearance is expected to add an international dimension to the event and provide Nigerian audiences with an opportunity to watch a demonstration of the Korean martial art.

The Korean Ambassador’s Cup has become an established event on Nigeria's taekwondo calendar. Its continued organisation also reflects efforts to strengthen sporting and cultural relations between Nigeria and South Korea while creating opportunities for local athletes to develop their competitive experience.

The National Sports Commission's backing is expected to support the federation's efforts to deliver the competition. The event will also give participating athletes an opportunity to test their abilities against competitors from different backgrounds.

The 2026 edition is scheduled to conclude in Abuja on October 26, according to the initial announcement. The organisers are looking to deliver a competition that meets international standards while supporting the development of taekwondo in Nigeria.
