Abia Valiants have taken a major step towards their ambition of reaching Nigeria’s top-flight handball league after winning the National Division One Handball Southeast Zonal Elimination.

The Abia side emerged champions of the zonal competition held at Nsukka Sports Club, Enugu State, earning the Southeast Zone’s qualification ticket for the National Division One Handball Championship later this year.

The victory represents another positive development for handball in Abia State, with the Valiants now turning their attention to the national championship and a possible route into the Ardova Premier League.

Chairman of the Abia State Handball Association, Dr. Onyemenam, FCA, congratulated the players, coaches and officials for their impressive showing throughout the competition.

He praised the team’s determination and resilience, urging the players to remain focused as they prepare for the national championship.

Onyemenam said the national competition provides the Valiants with an opportunity to take another step towards their larger objective of securing promotion to the Ardova Premier League.

Also congratulating the team, Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George, expressed satisfaction with the achievement and urged the players and technical crew to intensify their preparations.

George stressed the importance of discipline, commitment and hard work as the team prepares to face stronger opposition at the national level.

Southeast Zonal Representative, Emmanuel Onyebuchi Asongwa (TM), described the Valiants’ success as part of the wider growth of handball in the region.

Asongwa said the development of the sport in the Southeast requires the collective commitment of players, coaches, administrators and other stakeholders.

He noted that the region’s ambition should go beyond participating in national competitions to producing teams capable of making a strong impact at the national level.

The Abia Valiants will now begin preparations for the National Division One Handball Championship, where they will seek to convert their zonal success into another significant achievement.

Their performance has also raised expectations among supporters and stakeholders in Abia, who will be hoping the team can maintain its momentum and move closer to the Ardova Premier League.
