7 Days to Go: Abeokuta Set for Historic First-Ever West African Para Games

Posted : 19 November 2025

With just seven days remaining until the inaugural West African Para Games (Zones A & B) kick off in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed that preparations across all areas are progressing smoothly.

Scheduled to run from November 26 to December 4, the Games will bring together para athletes from across West Africa, marking a significant milestone for Nigeria as it strengthens its leadership in the development of para sports.

The event reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR’s commitment to positioning Nigeria as a preferred destination for international sporting competitions. This aligns with the Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE), which continues to promote the country’s sports sector through improved infrastructure, increased participation, and broader international engagement.

Preparations across key operational areas—including accommodation, transportation, venue readiness, medical services, accreditation, media operations, security, volunteer mobilisation, and classification facilities—are reportedly in advanced stages. According to Local Organising Committee officials, Abeokuta is ready to deliver an event that will showcase both athletic excellence and the state’s hospitality, culture, and organisational capacity.

President of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN), Sunday Odebode, praised the NSC for its dedication and coordination, highlighting the quality and intensity of ongoing preparations. “These Games represent a new dawn for para sports in West Africa. The level of commitment shown by the NSC and LOC gives us full confidence that Nigeria will set a benchmark for future editions,” he said.

“Our athletes are ready, the organisers are ready, and we look forward to a truly historic opening day,” Odebode added. He also emphasized that the Games will deepen regional cooperation and expand competitive opportunities for para athletes across Africa.
