Aaron Rai made headlines at the Abu Dhabi Championship on Friday when he holed an approach shot from 218 yards on the par-5 second hole for a rare albatross, helping him move into a tie for the lead after 36 holes at Yas Links Golf Club.
Rai began the second round two strokes behind a group of co-leaders, including fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood, but his remarkable second shot on the par-5 No. 2 allowed him to pick up three strokes on the hole. Rai carded a 14-under 130 through two rounds to share the top spot with Fleetwood.
Reflecting on the albatross, Rai said the fast green and front-to-back slope helped the ball roll into the hole. “You couldn’t see it from the back of the fairway, so it was a nice surprise,” he noted.
Fleetwood, a two-time champion of the event, maintained his share of the lead with a 66, mixing seven birdies and a single bogey following an opening-round 64. He praised his solid start and consistent play, particularly his approach shots and putting, as key to remaining in contention.
Trailing Rai and Fleetwood by two strokes are Andy Sullivan of England (67), Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard (67), and South Africa’s Richard Sterne (68). Four players, including past champion Shane Lowry, sit three shots off the lead at 11-under following Friday’s action.
World No. 2 Rory McIlroy is eight-under through 36 holes, tied for 20th place after consecutive rounds of 68, as the leaderboard remains tightly packed heading into the weekend.
