Lagos is set to host the 65th FirstBank Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship as the prestigious tournament returns to Ikoyi Club 1938 from November 16 to 22, 2026. The championship remains one of Nigeria’s longest-running golf events and continues to provide a major platform for amateur golfers.
The tournament is sponsored by FirstBank and is recognised as a World Amateur Golf Ranking event. Eligible players can earn valuable WAGR points while competing against some of the leading amateur golfers from Nigeria and other parts of Africa.
The 2026 championship will feature a 54-hole competition, with the main event scheduled to begin on Friday, November 20. The second round will take place on Saturday, followed by the final round and championship conclusion on Sunday, November 22.
The week will also include several activities around the main competition. The Search4Stars Caddies Tournament is scheduled for November 16, while the Championship Kitty Tournament will hold on November 18. The Corporate Golf Challenge for Charity is planned for November 19 before the championship begins.
The event has built a strong reputation for developing amateur talent and providing a pathway for golfers seeking international recognition. FirstBank says the championship has evolved beyond the competition itself, with youth development, caddie development, corporate engagement and charitable activities now forming part of the wider programme.
Babatunde Oyalami enters the 2026 edition as the defending champion after winning last year’s tournament at Ikoyi Club 1938. The Osun-based golfer recorded a three-round gross score of 231, producing rounds of 78, 75 and 78 to finish three shots ahead of the field.
The 2025 championship was the 64th edition and attracted significant attention, with competitors battling for a total prize pool of N34.5 million. The tournament’s established history and WAGR status have continued to attract strong amateur participation.
FirstBank has backed the Lagos Amateur Open for decades and describes the event as part of its wider First@Sports initiative. The bank says its continued involvement is aimed at supporting sporting talent and sustaining major sporting properties in Nigeria.
With registration details for the 65th edition still to be announced, attention will now turn to the participating golfers and the challenge of taking the title from Oyalami. The tournament will also provide another opportunity for Nigeria’s emerging golfers to compete for international ranking points on home soil.
