4th AYG: Nigeria Shines with 11-Medal Haul in Track Events

Team Nigeria delivered a stellar performance on the track as the athletics events concluded at the 4th African Youth Games in Angola on Saturday, securing a remarkable total of 11 medals. The contingent’s haul included six gold and five silver medals, highlighting the nation’s growing talent in youth athletics.

In the sprints, Nigeria made a strong statement in the 100 metres. Rosemary Chigozie Nwakwo powered to gold in the girls’ race, finishing in 11.77 seconds. She was followed by South Africa’s Oluchi Ndubueze, who took silver in 12.12 seconds, and Morocco’s Maria Saadi, who claimed bronze in 12.27 seconds. In the boys’ 100 metres, Emmanuel Akolo earned silver with a time of 10.76 seconds, narrowly missing gold to South Africa’s Micah Africa, who clocked 10.67 seconds.

Nigeria also excelled in the 400 metres events. Hafsoh Bisola Majekodunmi captured gold in the girls’ 400 metres, completing the race in 55.16 seconds ahead of Ethiopia’s Desta Kurni and Congo’s Maguerita Athouaby. In the boys’ 400 metres, David Udoh finished with silver in 47.77 seconds, just behind South Africa’s Fairlie Jaydon.

In field events, Nigeria continued its golden run. Timothy claimed gold in the triple jump, while Godswill Anelechi Nkemakolam added silver in the boys’ long jump with a leap of 7.18 metres, finishing behind South Africa’s Jayden Fourie.

The Nigerian athletes also excelled in hurdles and short sprints. Gift Gowon secured silver in the 400 metres hurdles, while Tejiri Ugoh claimed gold in the girls’ 200 metres, crossing the line in 23.95 seconds ahead of South Africa’s Isabella Gunter and Gambia’s Njie Adama. In the boys’ 200 metres, Perfect Faye earned silver with a season-best time of 21.47 seconds.

Team Nigeria capped off its athletics campaign with outstanding relay performances. The girls’ medley relay team—comprising Miriam Jegede, Miracle Oluebube, Faith Ezechukwu, and Jacinter Lawrence—clinched gold, while the boys’ medley relay team of Gift Gowon, Emmanuel Akolo, David Udoh, and Tosin Solomon Essan also secured gold, marking a memorable conclusion to Nigeria’s track events at the Games.
