4th African Youth Games: Team Nigeria Dominates Weightlifting Medal Table

Nigeria stamped its authority on Day 1 of the weightlifting competitions at the 4th African Youth Games in Angola, emerging as the dominant force with a haul of eight gold medals and one silver.

Favour Cornelius led the way in the 44kg category, producing a stellar performance by lifting 50kg in the snatch, 64kg in the clean and jerk, and achieving a combined total of 114kg, earning three gold medals.

In the 48kg division, Esther Chidalu Ezenwa added to Nigeria’s success with another triple-gold display, lifting 63kg in the snatch, 77kg in the clean and jerk, and posting a total of 140kg to top her category.

Chinaza Cecelia Ezenwa continued the golden streak in the 53kg class, winning two gold medals and one silver. She lifted 65kg in the snatch to secure silver, then rebounded with 83kg in the clean and jerk and 148kg in total, both earning gold.

The Day 1 results highlighted Nigeria’s dominance across multiple weight categories, demonstrating both depth and skill in the national weightlifting squad.

This impressive start sets a high benchmark for the remainder of the weightlifting events and positions Team Nigeria as a major contender for overall success at the Games.

With eight gold medals and one silver on the opening day, Nigeria’s weightlifters have made a resounding statement, promising an exciting continuation of the competition.
