30 African Countries Expected in Abuja for 2026 AACT as LGAN Unveils ₦547m Budget

More than 30 African countries are expected in Abuja for the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT), as the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) steps up preparations for the continental women's amateur golf championship. The tournament is scheduled for November 2 to 7 at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja.

LGAN President and Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, Dr Lami Onayi Ahmed, confirmed the preparations during a media briefing in Abuja. She also disclosed that the organisers have proposed a ₦547 million operational budget for the championship.

The tournament will bring together national teams from across Africa, with each participating country expected to field a team of three players. The event is sanctioned by The R&A and is regarded as one of Africa's leading women's team amateur golf competitions.

Venue preparations have been a major focus for the organisers. LGAN has assured participating countries that the IBB International Golf and Country Club will host the championship, despite concerns surrounding the facility's prolonged closure.

Ahmed said the LOC is working with government agencies and other stakeholders to ensure the course and wider tournament arrangements meet international standards. Security, transportation, accommodation, medical services, accreditation and protocol arrangements are also being coordinated ahead of the teams' arrival.

The championship programme will include team arrivals and accreditation, practice sessions, the Supporters' Game, the captains and managers' meeting, a flag-hoisting ceremony and the official opening. The tournament will then proceed to the championship rounds before the delegates' meeting, prize presentation, flag-lowering ceremony and closing banquet.

The event is also being positioned as a platform for sports tourism and economic development. LGAN has sought partnerships with government institutions and private-sector organisations, while the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy has been approached to support cultural activities around the tournament.

The Federal Government has backed the hosting plans, with the National Sports Commission previously endorsing Nigeria's bid to stage the competition in Abuja. The championship is expected to attract national delegations, officials, diplomats and international media, creating opportunities to showcase Nigeria's hospitality and women's golf development.

The AACT will also be followed by the Nigeria Ladies Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship from November 7 to 10 at the same venue. The additional event is expected to extend the golf programme and provide further competitive opportunities for players.
