2nd Niger Delta Games: Wrestling Lifts Ondo’s Medal Haul

Wrestling events have boosted Team Ondo’s performance at the ongoing second edition of the Niger Delta Games in Benin, with the wrestlers adding two gold medals to the state’s tally.

Esther Ashaolu and Ummamah Abdul-Rahman clinched gold medals in the 61kg and 65kg categories, respectively, raising the state’s gold count to six.

Ashaolu, who spoke with journalists after her victory, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to showcase her talent despite the short period of preparation.

She said she was delighted to have contributed to the state’s medal haul.

“I am very happy. This is my first competition outside Ondo State, and I am glad to have succeeded.

“I pray that this success continues,” she said.

In other wrestling events, Ojo Dada won silver in the 55kg category, while Waliat Adeniran secured bronze in the 57kg division, and Boluwatife Adeyemo claimed bronze in the 51kg event.

In weightlifting, Olajide Mayowa won two silver medals in the 79kg category, while Adebusuyi Moyinoluwa earned two bronze medals.

In tennis, Rhaman Zayan won silver in the boys’ singles and teamed up with Adesewa Olaniyan to secure another silver in the mixed doubles event.

Ondo also claimed silver in the women’s basketball final after a 20–23 loss to Bayelsa.

In boxing, Feranmi Oluwatobiloba secured silver in the women’s 65kg bout, while Monday Ikuepemitan and Gbenga Akinmusere won silver medals in the men’s 65kg and 60kg categories, respectively.

Adebola Aliu won bronze in the women’s singles table tennis event and later combined with Marvelous Kuteyi to win bronze in the women’s doubles.

In swimming, Grace Giwa and Patience Nigeria won bronze medals in the 100m freestyle and 400m freestyle events, respectively.

In traditional wrestling, Kehinde Oriowo secured silver in the men’s 45kg category, while Eze Aliagu won bronze in the 70kg division.
