23rd African Fencing Championships: Nigeria Earns A+ Rating from FIE After Successful Hosting

Posted : 01 July 2025

The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has awarded Nigeria an A+ rating for successfully hosting the 23rd African Fencing Championships, held from June 25 to 29 at Charterhouse, Lagos.

The high praise was accompanied by strong endorsements from the FIE, which is now considering Nigeria as a future host for international fencing competitions.

FIE Secretary General, Gulnora Saidova, on her first official visit to Africa, expressed her delight with the quality of facilities, the professionalism of the organisers, and the warm hospitality shown throughout the championship.

“This is my first time in Nigeria, and I’m truly impressed by the facilities and the professionalism of the organisers,” Saidova said.

She added:

“It has given us confidence that Nigeria can host more international competitions. The atmosphere has been incredible.”

Saidova also praised the commitment of the Lagos State Government, particularly the Deputy Governor, in supporting fencing’s development in Nigeria—a country she described as having immense sporting potential.

During her visit, she joined a top-level FIE delegation on a courtesy visit to the Governor of Lagos State, where discussions centered on the sustainability and institutional backing of fencing in Nigeria.

“The enthusiasm shown by Lagos State is a clear sign that the future of fencing here is bright,” Saidova noted.
“From what I’ve seen these past few days, I’m confident the FIE will seriously consider Nigeria for hosting even larger global tournaments.”

She also stressed the need for continuous government involvement to ensure fencing’s growth and long-term success in the country.

“Nigeria is on the right path, but sustained government support is essential for the sport to thrive,” she said.

Saidova made a formal appeal to have fencing recognized as a priority sport, particularly in Lagos State, citing its role in youth development and its contribution to Nigeria’s Olympic ambitions.

“Fencing is an Olympic sport and offers Nigeria a great chance to strengthen its presence on the global stage,” she said.
“I urge the government to officially prioritise fencing in Lagos and support hosting more international tournaments.”

According to her, the FIE aims to make Nigeria the continental hub for fencing in Africa, a move expected to boost economic growth and ensure the sport’s sustainability across the region.
