2026 WTT Contender Lagos promises thrilling battles as world stars arrive

Posted : 19 May 2026

Nigeria is set for another major international sporting spectacle as the 2026 World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Lagos serves off today at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Tournament Director Kweku Tandoh said the competition would feature some of the world’s finest players, with three athletes ranked among the world’s top 20 and about 30 others placed inside the global top 100.

According to Tandoh, the Lagos tournament presents players with a major opportunity to secure valuable ranking points ahead of key international competitions, including Olympic qualification events and the 2027 World Championships in Kazakhstan.

“This is the first event after the last world championships, so players are eager to gather points early and strengthen their qualification chances,” he said.

He added that competitors would be aiming to avoid difficult qualification tournaments by accumulating enough ranking points as early as possible in the season.

Tandoh also promised fans exciting contests, intense rivalries, and high-quality performances throughout the championship.

He noted that the event would provide Nigerian players with a rare chance to compete against elite international opponents and gain valuable experience capable of improving their confidence on the global stage.

“It is important for our players to face the very best because that exposure helps their development and confidence internationally,” he said.

The tournament director praised Egyptian stars Hana Goda and Dina Meshref for their remarkable improvement, noting that both players now possess the quality to challenge highly ranked opponents.

Despite expressing optimism about the developmental gains for Nigerian athletes, Tandoh admitted that the strength of the field could make it difficult for home players to progress deep into the tournament.

Meanwhile, President of ITTF Africa, Wahid Oshodi, stressed the need for greater investment in coaching, player development, and international exposure for African athletes.

Oshodi observed that while Nigeria continues to perform impressively at the youth level, transitioning players successfully into the senior category remains a major challenge.

Also speaking, Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, welcomed players and officials to Lagos, describing the tournament as another milestone in the state’s sporting growth.

Fatodu commended Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his continued support for sports development and efforts to position Lagos as a leading destination for global sporting events.

The 2026 WTT Contender Lagos highlights the growing capacity of Nigeria to host world-class athletic competitions. With top-tier global talent assembled at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, local fans can expect exceptional performances over the coming days. The event marks a vital step forward for both local player development and the state's sports tourism initiatives.
