Nigeria’s Sultan Agunbiade emerged as the country’s last remaining hope in the men’s singles event after defeating compatriot Mathew Fabunmi 3-1 at the ongoing 2026 WTT Contender Lagos.
The thrilling first-round clash was played at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall inside the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
Agunbiade, who battled through the qualifying rounds earlier in the tournament, continued his impressive run with another composed performance to secure a place in the next stage.
The young Nigerian had already caught the attention of fans on Wednesday after overcoming wildcard entrant Afeez Yunus 3-1 to qualify for the main draw.
His back-to-back victories have not only boosted his confidence but are also expected to improve his standing on the international ranking table.
While Agunbiade celebrated progression, it was a disappointing outing for several other Nigerian players who bowed out after facing tough opposition from Europe and Asia.
Among the home stars eliminated from the competition were Olajide Omotayo, Taiwo Matti, Muiz Adegoke, and Azeez Solanke.
In another major match, defending champion Anders Lind survived an early scare before fighting back from two sets down to defeat France’s Iulian Chirita 3-2.
The Danish star admitted he struggled at the beginning of the encounter before eventually finding his rhythm.
“The first match in any tournament is always difficult. I couldn’t really get into the game early enough, but I’m happy I managed to recover and win,” Lind said.
Lind also praised the atmosphere created by Lagos fans, describing their support as one of the highlights of the championship.
“The supporters here are incredible. Their energy during matches motivates every player,” he added.
The competition continues in Lagos with players battling for ranking points, international recognition, and a share of the 100,000-dollar prize purse.
The dramatic early exits of established local favourites leave immense pressure on Agunbiade to sustain his impressive form on home soil. As top international contenders showcase their elite skills, the remaining fixtures promise higher stakes and intense table tennis action inside the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall. Fans remain hopeful that Nigeria's lone survivor can continue to defy expectations against formidable global opposition.
