Lights Spikers VC opened their campaign at the 2026 Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) Phase One Division One National League with an impressive 3-0 win over Wikki Spikers VC at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The Abuja-based club produced a confident and disciplined display on Sunday to secure the straight-sets victory by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-21.
Lights Spikers started strongly in the opening set, dominating key rallies and maintaining control to claim a 25-20 win.
Wikki Spikers improved in the second set and attempted to put pressure on their opponents, but Lights Spikers remained composed during crucial moments to seal the set 25-19.
With momentum firmly on their side, Lights Spikers continued their aggressive play in the third set and wrapped up the encounter 25-21 to complete an emphatic sweep.
Head Coach of Lights Spikers, Uthman Mohammed, praised his players for their determination and team spirit after the victory.
According to him, the result showed that the team should not be underestimated despite being regarded by many as outsiders.
“It was a good game. Wikki Spikers gave their best, and so did we. Many people saw us as underdogs,” Mohammed said.
“I told them to watch out for our return. We won Division Two as champions without losing a set. No team took a set from us.”
Mohammed also revealed that the team spent seven weeks in intensive camping ahead of the competition to strengthen unity and tactical understanding among the players.
“What I have inculcated in the players is one spirit, one team, one goal. Volleyball is a collective game,” he added.
Elsewhere, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) recorded a 3-0 walkover victory after Kwara United VC failed to honour their fixture.
Katsina United VC also earned a 3-0 walkover against Bayelsa Volleyball Association following their opponents’ absence.
The women’s category and the Phase One Division Two National League are scheduled to commence on Monday.
The championship, which began on Saturday, features 11 teams in Division One and seven teams in Division Two and will run until June 5 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The emphatic opening-day triumph positions the Abuja-based side as serious contenders as the national tournament gathers momentum. By translating their extensive preparation into a flawless tactical execution, the former Division Two champions proved their capabilities on the big stage. The squad will look to build on this solid foundation to maintain their winning streak in the upcoming fixtures.
