The race for the maiden Nigeria Super League (NSL) title has entered its decisive phase with Northern Lions, Southern Sharks, Middle-Belt Tigers, and Central Eagles booking places in the semi-finals after an action-packed group stage.
Southern Sharks claimed the final semi-final berth in emphatic fashion after overpowering Eastern Elephants in a rain-affected, rescheduled Match 9 on Monday.
With the contest reduced to five overs, the Sharks delivered a dominant all-round performance, posting an imposing 72/1 before limiting Eastern Elephants to 37/5 to secure a convincing 35-run victory.
The encounter was headlined by Isaac Danladi, whose explosive, unbeaten 51 off just 22 deliveries became one of the defining moments of the tournament. The hard-hitting batter registered the fastest half-century in Nigeria Super League history, steering Southern Sharks into the knockout round in style.
Danladi’s fireworks with the bat completely tilted the game in favour of the Sharks, while their disciplined bowling attack ensured Eastern Elephants never threatened during the chase.
Northern Lions had already stamped their authority on the competition by becoming the first team to qualify for the semi-finals after winning all four of their group matches.
Middle-Belt Tigers and Central Eagles also advanced following a series of consistent performances that kept them among the top contenders throughout the tournament.
Focus now shifts to the final group-stage showdown between Northern Lions and Middle-Belt Tigers, a key fixture that will determine the top-ranked side heading into the semi-finals.
The semi-final matches are scheduled for today, while the historic final of the inaugural Nigeria Super League will take place on Saturday, May 30.
The competition has further highlighted the steady rise of cricket in Nigeria, with emerging talents and strong regional rivalries adding excitement to the country’s growing domestic scene.
As the tournament draws to an exciting close, the performance of these semi-finalists underlines the remarkable standard of play established in this debut edition. With individual records tumbling and collective grit on display, the stage is set for a thrilling conclusion that will crown the ultimate champions of Nigerian cricket.
