2026 Nigeria Super League: Evangel powers Southern Sharks past Dolphins in dominant rebound win

Posted : 19 May 2026

Southern Sharks produced a strong all-round performance to defeat Western Dolphins by 48 runs in their second match of the 2026 Nigeria Super League at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in Lagos.

Bouncing back from an opening-game defeat, the Sharks displayed attacking batting and disciplined bowling to secure an important victory in the competition.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Southern Sharks posted an impressive 176 for seven in their allotted 20 overs.

The foundation of the innings was laid by Isesele Odion Evangel, who smashed a brilliant 54 off just 31 deliveries, striking 11 boundaries in an aggressive knock that put the Dolphins under pressure early.

Kenneth Boniface also played a vital role with a quick-fire 47 from 25 balls, while Akhigbe Miracle added 28 runs to strengthen the total.

Speaking after the innings, Evangel said the team was determined to respond positively after losing their opening fixture.

“We knew we had to respond strongly after our first game, and everyone contributed,” he said.

Western Dolphins bowlers Udekwe Chiemelie and Monday Elijah claimed two wickets each but found it difficult to slow the Sharks’ scoring rate.

In reply, Dolphins struggled to build momentum after losing early wickets in the chase of 177.

Captain Vincent Adewoye led the resistance with 35 runs off 21 balls, while Destiny Chilemanya and Chiemelie made useful contributions, but the target proved beyond reach.

Southern Sharks maintained control throughout the innings with disciplined bowling and sharp fielding.

Ayeni Precious and Ismail Abdullahi claimed two wickets apiece as Dolphins were bowled out for 128 in 16.4 overs.

Akhigbe Miracle capped an impressive all-round display with an effective spell alongside his contribution with the bat.

The Southern Sharks captain praised his players for showing resilience and intensity after their previous setback.

“This is the reaction we wanted. The players showed character and intensity,” he said.

Evangel was named Player of the Match for his commanding half-century that inspired the Sharks’ convincing victory.

The Nigeria Super League continues to provide exciting cricket action while highlighting emerging talents across the country.

The resounding victory establishes Southern Sharks as a formidable force in the tournament as they successfully put their initial loss behind them. With both the batting and bowling units delivering top-tier performances, the team looks well-positioned for their upcoming fixtures. Cricket enthusiasts across Nigeria can look forward to more high-stakes action as the competitive tournament progresses at the Tafawa Balewa Square.
