Edo State is already reaping the benefits of hosting the 2nd edition of the Niger Delta Games (NDG), as organisers have completed major upgrades to sporting facilities earmarked for the competition.
Following the precedent set in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, prior to the first edition, the organisers and the sponsor, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), have fulfilled their promise to enhance facilities in host states.
Significant rehabilitation work has been carried out at the 50-meter, 20-feet-deep Olympic-standard swimming pool at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, as well as at the tennis courts adjacent to the main arena.
Reacting to the upgrades, Samuel Ogbuku assured Governor Monday Okpebholo during the unveiling of Edo State as hosts of the Games on December 4 that the facilities would receive support. “Let me offer you the assurance that, as part of our intervention policy, sporting facilities for the Games will be upgraded to meet international standards,” he said.
The promise was reiterated by Itiako Ikpokpo, Chairman of Dunamis-Icon Limited, organisers of the Games, during a recent inspection tour. “We have assessed the facilities that will host the competitions, and within a few weeks, there will be a major transformation of those that had deteriorated. This is a legacy that the Games bring to host states,” Ikpokpo stated.
Other renovated facilities include the twin volleyball and basketball courts at the Wire Road Sports Centre, which have been fitted with dressing rooms and conveniences for athletes.
The Niger Delta Games will feature athletes from nine regional member states: Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo, and Rivers. Over 3,000 athletes and 500 coaches will compete across 16 sports, with the Games scheduled to hold from February 20 to 27, 2026.
