2026 National Division 1&2 League: NY Spikers upbeat after winning debut match

NY Spikers Volleyball Club head coach, Lizzy Asemah, has praised her players for their determination and fighting spirit after recording a winning start at the ongoing 2026 National Division One and Two League in Abuja.

The debutants secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Queen Aminat Spikers Volleyball Club in their opening match at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

Speaking after the encounter, Asemah described the victory as a major confidence booster for the team, especially considering the limited time available for preparation ahead of the competition.

According to her, the players showed great character against opponents who had spent years training together in camp setups.

“The girls really worked hard for this victory. Most of them are amateur players, yet they played against experienced opponents and still came out strong,” Asemah said.

“We had little time to prepare, but the commitment and dedication from the players made the difference. Even though we dropped some sets, I remain proud of their performance.”

The coach added that the win has raised expectations around the team, stressing that the players are ready to maintain their momentum in subsequent matches.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. This victory has taken the team to another level mentally and we are prepared to keep improving.

“We will continue to approach every game with seriousness and work harder to achieve positive results,” she added.

The Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) 2026 Phase One Division One National League features 11 teams, while Division Two has seven teams each in the men’s and women’s categories.

The championship began on May 23 and will run until June 5 at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

This successful debut sets a promising foundation for NY Spikers as they navigate their maiden campaign in the national tournament. The resilience displayed by the squad highlights their potential to challenge established teams and disrupt the existing hierarchy within the divisions. As the league progresses in Abuja, maintaining this high level of tactical discipline will be crucial for their aspiration to secure a podium finish.
