Posted : 31 August 2025

Team Nigeria began their campaign on an impressive note at the 2025 World Youth Scrabble Championships (WYSC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with several standout performances on Day 1.

Captain Abdulqudus Olawale Aliu, the highest-ranked Nigerian at the end of the day, recorded seven wins from eight games with an outstanding cumulative score of +784, placing him 7th out of 218 players. The teenager, who dreams of studying English Literature at university, capped his remarkable start with a narrow 412–407 victory over Pakistan’s Manaal Asher.

Africa’s U-19 champion Prestige Archibong and Joy Nwabuzor also enjoyed strong outings, finishing with six wins each. Archibong posted an impressive +808 cumulative score, while Nwabuzor, who initially lost her first two games, bounced back to win six matches, ending the day on +367 points.

Reigning African U-15 champion Sophia Ebube Ekeruche showed her class once again, registering five wins and a draw with a cumulative +619. She defeated Pakistan’s Shanzay Fazil 408–366 in one of her standout performances.

At the top of the table, Australia’s Oscar Ivanovski (8 wins, +1015) and India’s Suyash Manchali (8 wins, +600) remain unbeaten after Day 1.

In the team standings, Nigeria is firmly in contention for podium places, alongside India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Kenya, represented by 22 players, saw their best result from Dalton Njenga, who recorded four wins and finished Day 1 with -123 points, including a notable 507–309 victory over Indonesia’s Faris Daffa Muhammad.
