The five-day tournament runs from October 27 to October 31, featuring participation from over 100 schools across six educational districts in Lagos.
The championship was established in 2015 by Kayode Opeifa, Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation and former Lagos State Commissioner for Transport, as a way to combine his passion for handball with giving back to society on his birthday. The tournament aims to promote handball in schools, providing young people with a positive platform and helping curb juvenile delinquency across Lagos communities.
Following International Handball Federation rules, the event features both junior and senior categories for boys and girls. Participation has grown significantly since its inaugural edition, which featured 67 schools, attracting both government and private institutions over the years. The competition enjoys sponsorship from notable figures including Kessington Adebutu, Sam Ocheho, Shakiru Alli, and Tunde Balogun.
Historically strong performers include Mobolaji Bank Anthony School, Wesley Girls, Herbert Macaulay School, Jagunmolu Senior Secondary School, and Whitesand College, while Mainland Senior School, Onike Junior High, Aiyetoro Senior Grammar School, Zumratul Islamiyah Senior School, and Eletu Edibo Junior High have also consistently impressed.
The tournament has produced several national and international handball players, such as Gbamire Grace, Adebisi Tomoloju, Gbenga Cole, Kuti Korede, Azeez Sulaimon, Sanni Bature, Mariam Ojo, Temilola Adeleye, Seun Adeniji, Comfort Stephens, Babatunde Taiwo, Kehinde Salami, Faruk Kareem, Mukaila Fuad, Sulaimon Ashogbon, Basit Akanni, and Christian Faloki.
On day three at the Mobolaji Johnson Complex, Ikeja Senior Grammar School edged Lagos City College 4-3, while Government College defeated Patricia College 5-3. Gaskiya Junior College overcame Morocco Junior School 1-0, and Whitesand Senior triumphed over Dolphins Junior School 5-1.
