Nasarawa State improved its medal tally at the ongoing 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, to six after an impressive Day 6 performance.
Teen sensation Sidi Ibrahim clinched the state’s first gold medal by defeating athletes from 21 other states to emerge champion in the Boys’ Junior Stableford Golf event. The prodigy had earlier secured a bronze medal in the Eclectic Golf competition and is aiming for a second gold when he competes in the Stroke-Play event at the James Ibori Golf Course on Wednesday morning.
Another gold medal opportunity awaits Team Nasarawa, as Ibrahim’s teammate, Godwin Friday, prepares to face Delta State in the Match-Play Golf event on Wednesday.
In Shooting Sport, Team Nasarawa claimed bronze in the Mixed Air Rifle event, finishing behind Imo and Rivers States. The duo of Sodunke Samuel Opeyemi and Oluwatomiwa Quwiyat outperformed 17 other states to secure third place.
Hockey also brought success, with Nasarawa Girls’ Team defeating Team Imo 2-1 in a Group B clash, finishing second with eight points and advancing to the semifinals. The Boys’ Hockey Team also impressed, beating Team Lagos 2-0 at the Okpanam Hockey Pitch to maintain a perfect Pool B record with nine points from three matches.
However, football produced some drama as the Nasarawa vs. Lagos match was halted due to technical issues. With the score still 0-0 early in the second half, organizers have yet to decide the outcome. Both teams currently sit on six points each in Group D, ahead of Yobe (3 points) and Delta (0 points).
So far, Team Nasarawa has one gold and five bronze medals, including three bronzes in karate, courtesy of Magdalen Inji (-47kg girls’ category), Alexander Otuma (-50kg boys), and Chineye Agbo (+47kg girls).
With ongoing competitions in hockey, golf, darts, and volleyball, hope remains high for Team Nasarawa to further improve its medal standing.
