As the 9th National Youth Games continues in Asaba, Delta State, the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF) has expressed confidence in the country’s golfing future. Technical Director, Olajide Bolaji, highlighted the potential of Nigerian youths to excel both locally and internationally.
Speaking at the Ibori Golf and Country Club, venue for the Games’ golf events, Bolaji described golf as not only a prestigious sport but also one capable of delivering medals, noting that 24 medals are up for grabs in this year’s edition.
The tournament has drawn young talents from more than 22 states, showcasing Nigeria’s budding stars. One standout participant recently represented the country at the World School Championship in Morocco, reflecting the nation’s growing visibility on the global golf scene.
Bolaji commended Delta State for providing excellent facilities but urged further investments to maintain and improve standards. He also emphasized the importance of partnerships between government, corporate bodies, and the private sector to drive the sport’s growth nationwide.
“Golf is a game of networking, where you meet people of influence and affluence,” he said, stressing the broader value of the sport beyond competition.
While acknowledging government efforts to support golf, Bolaji appealed for greater commitment. “The government is trying, but they can do better. To compete globally and groom our children for the future, we need stronger financial and institutional backing,” he concluded.
