It was a day of mixed fortunes for Team Imo at the ongoing 9th National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba 2025, as the state celebrated a historic triumph in cricket while narrowly missing out in other disciplines.
The Imo male cricket team delivered a dominant performance in the final, overcoming a resilient Team Edo to secure the prestigious gold medal. The victory highlighted Imo’s growing reputation in the sport and provided a morale boost for the contingent.
With the cricket success, Imo’s medal haul at the end of the day rose to 2 gold, 7 silver, and 2 bronze medals, keeping the state firmly in contention on the medal table.
In judo, Agasiem Favour Chinonye, competing in the hotly contested 36kg category, came close to securing a podium finish. Despite her determined effort against her opponent from Team Ondo, she narrowly missed out in the bronze medal bout. Her spirited performance, however, earned praise for her resilience and fighting spirit.
As the Games progress, Team Imo’s camp remains optimistic, inspired by their cricket victory and determined to add to their medal tally in the coming days.
