2025 NYG: Edo Dominate Weightlifting with Six Gold Medals

Team Edo stamped their authority on the weightlifting events of the ongoing 2025 National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, powering to six gold, one silver, and two bronze medals across the Women’s 44kg, 48kg, and Men’s 56kg weight classes.

 

Team Akwa Ibom also impressed with two golds and one bronze, while Team Niger showed grit with one gold and two silvers to secure a strong spot on the medals table.

 

Elsewhere, Team Oyo and Team FCT each collected three silver medals, while Delta and Osun bagged three and two bronze medals respectively.

 

In the Women’s 44kg category, Edo’s Favour Cornelius was unstoppable, sweeping all three gold medals with lifts of 55kg in the Snatch, 67kg in the Clean & Jerk, and a total of 122kg. Esther Chidalu Ezenwa (FCT) settled for all three silvers, while Opeyemi Mumeenat Jamiu (Osun) and Jennifer Odivwri (Delta) shared the bronzes.

 

The Women’s 48kg class also belonged to Edo, as Esther Amarachi Chijioke replicated her National Youth Games heroics by winning all three golds. She lifted 63kg in the Snatch and 83kg in the Clean & Jerk, for a total of 146kg. Owoyele Fathia (Oyo) took all three silvers, while Goodness Ogodo (Delta) secured all three bronzes.

 

In the Men’s 56kg division, Destiny Okon Bassey of Akwa Ibom emerged champion with two golds (Snatch – 75kg, Total – 162kg) and a bronze in the Clean & Jerk. Crowd favourite Abdulsalam Kamaldeen (Niger) thrilled fans with a gold in the Clean & Jerk (91kg) and two silvers. Edo’s Timileyin Williams rounded off the podium with one silver and two bronzes.

 

With Edo’s dominance in the women’s events and spirited competition from Akwa Ibom and Niger in the men’s division, weightlifting is already shaping up to be one of the fiercest battles on the medals table in Asaba.
