2025 NSF: Team Nasarawa dazzles at opening ceremony

Team Nasarawa proudly joined thirty-five other States of the Federation and FCT Abuja, to participate at the grand  opening ceremony of the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival held at the prestigious MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Sunday evening.

 

The opening ceremony featured a vibrant display of athletic prowess and rich cultural heritage from participating States and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

 

Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Kwanta Yakubu, represented Governor Abdullahi Sule at the historic event which was declared open by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was represented by Vice President, Kashim Shettima, amidst Governors from some selected States, including the host State's Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, former Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Dimeji Bankole, and Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, among other high-profile personalities.

 

The opening ceremony was a kaleidoscope of colours, music and dance, showcasing the rich diversity of Nigeria's cultural landscape, with international musical icons like Davido and Asa thrilling the audience to live performances.

 

Team Nasarawa's Contingent comprising talented athletes, coaches, and officials performed the march past with pride, enthusiasm, and team spirit, waving the State's flag in their sporting uniforms, setting off the tone for a thrilling competition.

 

According to President Tinubu, the Sports Festival is the biggest sporting stage in the country and promises to be an exciting celebration of sports, unity and excellence, with over ten thousand athletes and their coaches from across the country vying for top honours.

 

Team Nasarawa, led by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Kwanta Yakubu, had arrived Abeokuta with a 300-member contingent, and will participate in twenty-three sporting events in the two-week-long biannual multi-sports fiesta, and would be looking forward to surpassing previous records and set new ones in the history of their participation in the event.

 

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director General of the National Sports Commission who also doubles as Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee, Bukola Olopade said the Sports Festival would be a breeding ground for future world champions, assuring of a hitch-free and historic event, while also thanking the host State for putting all necessary mechanisms in place for a successful event.

 

Tagged "GATEWAY GAMES 2024", the 22nd National Sports Festival, featuring thirty-three sports, kicked off on 16th May, and will climax on 30th May, 2025.

 

Delta State won the last edition held in Asaba, Delta State, in 2022.
