If not for quick intervention, chaos would have broken out at the golf event ongoing at the Abeokuta Golf Centre during the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF), as officials engaged in a dispute following the disqualification of Kano women golfers for allegedly cheating in the medal stage.
The Kano golfers were on the verge of receiving their respective medals on stage when the officiating officials claimed that the players had cheated on their records.
It was alleged that the Kano golfers started nursing medals, but their chance of securing them was dashed by the officiating officials.
Efforts made by the Acting Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Ibrahim Umar Fagge, to find out the reasons for the disqualification were met with failure, as the officiating officials failed to provide proof for their actions.
Ibrahim Umar Fagge called on the National Sports Commission and key stakeholders to intervene and save the image of golf at the National Sports Festival and future championships.
The Kano team accused the Technical Director of Golf, Jide, of biased judgment meant to favor Ogun State.
The Acting Chairman, however, said it was unfair, especially after the state prepared well for the festival, for someone to damage the image of the game and the festival at large.
Investigation into the saga is ongoing, as the final word has yet to be heard.
