Pius Bamigboye, a former Kwara State chess coach, has pledged to motivate athletes representing the state at the ongoing 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF) in Abeokuta with cash rewards.
Speaking from Canada, Bamigboye said the initiative is aimed at encouraging the athletes to excel and win medals for Kwara.
According to him, athletes who win gold medals in team events will receive ₦50,000, while individual gold medalists will be awarded ₦25,000. Silver medalists in team events will earn ₦40,000, and those in individual events will get ₦20,000. Bronze medalists in team events will receive ₦20,000, while individual bronze medalists will take home ₦10,000.
Bamigboye also provided ₦20,000 for refreshments to help the athletes manage the mental demands of the board game.
The former chess player explained that the gesture is necessary due to the limited participation of states in chess, emphasizing the importance of extra motivation. He promised to complement the state government's incentives to enhance the athletes’ chances of winning.
