Edo State’s sensation of the moment, Osaretin Godwin, created a major upset on Wednesday in the cycling event at the ongoing 2025 National Sports Festival, as she overcame all hurdles to beat Nigeria’s first cycling Olympian, Ese Ukpeseraye, to second place in the race for a semi-final ticket in the women’s 200m sprint.
Osaretin Godwin finished first ahead of Ukpeseraye, to the surprise of most cyclists who cheered the teenage sensation as she crossed the finish line.
At the last Festival in Asaba, Delta State, Osaretin Godwin, one of the junior cyclists introduced to the sport by Edo State, despite her young age, competed with the senior girls but lost out to more experienced riders like Ukpeseraye, who represented Delta State then, and Oyo State’s top rider, Joke Durogbade.
However, all eyes will be on the women’s semi-finals and final to see if Ukpeseraye will use her wealth of experience to defeat Osaretin and retain the 200m gold.
Meanwhile, Team Borno and Team Bauchi could not compete in the morning cycling event due to late arrival at the starting point caused by poor transportation logistics.
It is noteworthy to mention that journalists covering the Festival are also having a rough time, as some of the venues have no media gallery or space to work without distraction and obstruction from fans.
