2025 NSF: Anambra rues quarter final loss in female volleyball

Posted : 27 May 2025

The Anambra female volleyball team has ended their quest for a medal at the ongoing 2nd National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun.

The hard-fighting Anambra ladies lost 0-3 to the superior strength of the Rivers girls in the quarterfinals at the Aleke Sports Complex in Abeokuta.

The exciting game ended 25-14, 26-24, 25-8 in favour of Rivers.

However, at the end of Day 10, Anambra had won a total of 14 medals comprising one gold, six silver, and seven bronze.

Speaking after the loss, some of the players expressed disappointment over their exit, saying they came with the ultimate prize in mind.

Ogechukwu Nwankwo, a star player on the team, said the loss was painful.

Nwankwo noted that the team gave their best, but it wasn’t enough to take them beyond the quarterfinals.

“We came to win and we did our best, but we lost out.

“We give thanks to God. Volleyball is a beautiful game, and I will continue to play it as long as the opportunity presents itself,” she said.

Also speaking, Chidimma Ezechukwu said the loss was emotional for them.

“We actually had the gold in mind, but unfortunately, we are out. We will go and prepare better for the next festival,” she said.

Rivers will square off against Oyo, while Ogun will face Kaduna in the semifinals.

In other events, Arinze Maduekwe advanced to the quarterfinals of the deaf table tennis competition after beating his opponent from Lagos 3-1, while Okwuoma Ugwumadu crashed out in the round of 16 after losing 2-3 to Delta.
