Team Bayelsa continued their impressive run at the ongoing National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, increasing their medal tally across multiple sports.
In shooting, Eko Miracle Etim showcased composure and accuracy to win gold in the Pistol Riley event, underlining Bayelsa’s rising strength in marksmanship.
On the football pitch, fortunes were mixed. The boys’ team edged past Team Enugu 1-0 to book a semifinal berth, while the girls’ team fell 3-0 to hosts Delta State.
Swimming produced more success, with Daniel claiming bronze in the 200m freestyle. The quartet of Daniel Odoh, Richman Bedford, Miebi Tobi, and Zion Agebed impressed in the 4x100m medley relay, securing silver to the delight of Bayelsa’s Director of Sports, Andrew Aye, who was in attendance.
In handball, Bayelsa’s boys battled Team Kano to an 18-18 draw but progressed to the quarterfinals thanks to superior goal difference. Meanwhile, in traditional wrestling (Kokowa), both male and female teams stormed into the semifinals with commanding performances.
Taekwondo also brought cheer as Velary Akhogba reached the quarterfinals of the Boys’ -48kg category after defeating his Jigawa opponent. In Para Weightlifting, ThankGod Ayebainemi Goodluck earned bronze in the 54kg category.
With track and field events now set to take centre stage, Team Bayelsa is targeting even more medals to bolster its overall standing at the Games.
