Team Nigeria has achieved two podium finishes at the ongoing Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad, India, as Didih Onome Omolola claimed gold in the women’s 53kg category.
This followed Ruth Nyong Asuquo’s earlier silver medal in the women’s 48kg junior category.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has applauded Team Nigeria for their outstanding performances during the first three days of the tournament. NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko expressed confidence that Onome’s golden lift marks the start of a successful medal haul for the team.
He stated, “This championship serves as qualifiers for the Commonwealth Games next year, making it imperative to excel to secure participation. That is why we ensured a dedicated budget line in the Appropriation Act, graciously approved by Mr. President. This guarantees stability for qualifiers and preparation for major events like the Olympics and Commonwealth Games well ahead of time.”
Dikko added, “Weightlifting has always been a sport of comparative advantage for Nigeria, and we expect a harvest of gold medals beginning with Onome. We have been monitoring the contingent in India, just as we do with all our international teams. This same contingent topped the African Weightlifting Championship in Mauritius earlier this year, so they can rightly be called African champions.”
Similarly, NSC Director-General Bukola Olopade expressed optimism about further successes, stating, “I was with this team in Mauritius when they won the African Championships and I can vouch for them. We have a generation of podium performers in the current weightlifting setup, and the Commonwealth Championship is another platform for them to conquer the world.”
The Commonwealth Senior, Junior, and Youth Weightlifting Championships are taking place in India from August 20 to 30, 2025.
