Benin City, Edo State – The 2025 Ardova Handball Premier League Phase 1 got off to a vibrant start on Tuesday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and the Etete Sports Center in Benin City. Day one featured electrifying matches, with Safety Babes and Soof Omo Ogiefo Academy emerging as standout teams in the women's category.
Defending champions Safety Babes showcased their superiority with a commanding 52–29 win over Ekiti Queens. Led by Most Valuable Player Ada Okey, the FRSC-sponsored team established a 23–13 halftime lead and dominated the second half to seal their first victory of the tournament.
Equally impressive were Soof Omo Ogiefo Academy, debuting in the league. The Edo-based side stunned the experienced Defender Babes 32–24 in front of enthusiastic home supporters. Omo Ogiefo led 15–12 at halftime and displayed discipline and intensity throughout the match. Despite an 11-goal effort from Blessing Iorlaha, Defender Babes were unable to keep up with the vibrant newcomers.
In another tight fixture, Plateau Peacocks edged Rivers Queens 22–21. The team from Jos maintained an 11–9 halftime lead and held off a strong challenge in the final minutes, with Choice Soji scoring nine crucial goals to secure the win.
Men's Category:
The men's games were equally action-packed. Tojemarine Handball Club, the reigning champions, opened their campaign with a solid 25–19 victory over newcomers Osun United. The Lagos-based side led 12–7 at halftime and kept control through structured defense and effective counter-attacks.
