The five-day tournament is being held at Charterhouse, Lagos, featuring top fencing talents from across the continent.
World No. 1 El-Sayed secured the tournament’s first gold medal after a dramatic 11–10 victory over compatriot Mahmoud Had Mohsen in the final.
Earlier, El-Sayed battled through a tough semifinal, edging out his brother, Mahmoud El-Sayed, 15–14 in a nail-biting encounter that showcased the depth of Egypt’s fencing pedigree.
In the women’s foil event, second seed Sara Amr clinched her first African title with a commanding 15–8 win over Côte d’Ivoire’s Isabel Esteban.
Amr had earlier defeated her teammate and 2024 bronze medallist, Noha Hany, in a tight 15–13 semi final clash.
Esteban, meanwhile, stunned top seed Malak Hamza of Egypt with a surprising 15–8 upset in the semifinal, before settling for silver in the final.
Following her victory, Amr credited her composure and focus as key factors in her triumph.
“I focused on staying calm and managing each match one at a time. It wasn’t easy, but I’m proud of how I handled the pressure,” Amr said.
Egypt’s double triumph underscores the nation’s continued dominance in African fencing, setting the pace early in the championship’s medal standings.
