Nigerian weightlifters showcased their class and dominance on Monday by securing all nine gold medals in the Weightlifting event on Day 3 of the ongoing 2023 African Games in Ghana.

Gold medals in the 55kg and 59kg women categories and the 67kg men category were all claimed by Nigerians.

At the Africa Games, each category awards 9 medals for Snatch, Clean and Jerk, and Total. A gold medal is given to the winner in Snatch, Clean and Jerk, and Total.

Three Nigerians—Adijat Olarinoye, Rafiatu Lawal, and Edidiong Umoafia—clinched all nine gold medals at the University of Ghana, Legon.

Competing in the 55kg class, Adijat Olarinoye, the gold medalist from the 2022 Commonwealth Games, secured gold in Snatch with an 80kg lift, gold in Clean and Jerk with a 105kg lift, and a third gold in Total with a 185kg lift.

Rufiatu Lawal, also a gold winner from the 2022 Commonwealth Games, claimed all three gold medals in the 59kg class. She snatched 85kg, recorded 105kg in Clean and Jerk, and earned the gold medal in Total with a 190kg lift.

In his debut in the 67kg class, Edidiong Umoafia demonstrated why he remains a dominant force in weightlifting in Africa and the world. He secured all the gold medals in that category, beginning with a 135kg lift in Snatch and a 165kg lift in Clean and Jerk, accumulating a total of 300kg.

So far, Team Nigeria Weightlifting has won a total of 14 medals in the Weightlifting event of the 13th Africa Games. On Day 1, King Kalu and Favour Agboro secured five medals, with Kalu winning two bronze medals in the 55kg men class and Agboro claiming two silver and a bronze in the 61kg class.
