Yuki Tsunoda Struggles in Red Bull, Qualifies Last at Spanish Grand Prix

Posted : 01 June 2025

Yuki Tsunoda found himself puzzled and frustrated after qualifying last, 20th, for the Spanish Grand Prix while his teammate Max Verstappen secured a strong third place. Despite encouragement from Red Bull team principal Christian Horner on Friday, Tsunoda struggled throughout the weekend, highlighting the difficulties the team’s second drivers face with a car that seems tailored to Verstappen’s driving style.

This season continues a pattern of challenges for those behind the four-time world champion, following Sergio Perez’s struggles last year and Liam Lawson’s brief stint earlier this year.

Tsunoda, who was promoted from Red Bull’s junior team, has yet to make a significant impact, with his best finish being ninth place in Bahrain. His performance has been consistently overshadowed, as shown by his 17th place in Monaco the previous weekend and now his last-place qualifying in Spain.

He described the car’s lack of grip and excessive tire degradation as major issues, leaving him without confidence during laps. His difficulties underline a broader problem among Red Bull’s second drivers, who appear unable to extract performance comparable to Verstappen’s.

Christian Horner admitted confusion over Tsunoda’s sudden drop in pace and suggested a thorough investigation to check for any damage or mechanical issues. Meanwhile, pressure mounts on Tsunoda as Red Bull’s rookie Isack Hadjar, who impressed with a sixth-place finish in Monaco, emerges as a potential contender for his seat. Tsunoda’s future at Red Bull may depend on how well he can adapt and improve in the upcoming races.
