Yazeed Al-Rajhi, Saudi Arabia’s local hero, took the overall lead for the first time at this year’s Dakar Rally after a strong performance in stage nine on Tuesday. Al-Rajhi, competing for the Toyota Overdrive Racing team, finished third in the 357km stage between Riyadh and Haradh, just over three minutes behind the winner, five-time Dakar champion Nasser Al-Attiyah from Qatar. This result allowed Al-Rajhi to surpass Henk Lategan, who had held the lead since stage two but struggled on Tuesday, finishing in 11th place after suffering two punctures.
Lategan's performance on Tuesday was marred by navigation issues and tire problems. He lost time early in the stage after getting lost and, despite thinking he missed a waypoint, he actually had it. The mistakes led to a puncture, and another flat tire towards the end compounded his troubles.
Lategan, who had seen his overall lead shrink to just 21 seconds after Sunday’s stage, had regained a five-minute advantage with a win on Monday. However, Tuesday's challenges left him nearly 13 minutes behind Al-Rajhi, with the Saudi driver now holding a lead of seven minutes and nine seconds with three stages remaining.
In the motorcycle category, Argentina’s Luciano Benavides claimed his second consecutive stage win, with Frenchman Adrien Van Beveren finishing in second. Overall leader Daniel Sanders, who finished third in the stage, increased his lead by over three minutes after his closest rival, Tosha Schareina of Spain, finished seventh.
Sanders now holds a comfortable 14-minute and 45-second lead. Stage 10, scheduled for Wednesday, will take the race from Haradh to Shubaytah, with competitors looking to close the gaps before the final stages.
