Williams Overhauls Team Radio Communication After Miami GP Confusion

Posted : 14 May 2025

Williams have implemented communication changes to prevent confusion like the one that occurred during the Miami Grand Prix, where Carlos Sainz mistakenly believed teammate Alex Albon had disobeyed team orders not to overtake.

Sainz expressed frustration after Albon passed him despite being told the Thai driver would hold position. Team principal James Vowles said the misunderstanding was quickly cleared up after a post-race discussion with both drivers and assured that improved protocols are now in place.

Vowles explained that the issue stemmed from a cooling problem on Albon's car, which required either overtaking or creating a gap to allow better airflow. This led to conflicting messages from engineers—one told Sainz Albon wouldn’t attack, while another was still weighing options.

The situation marked the first time under Vowles’ leadership that Williams had to issue complex team orders, which ultimately weren’t delivered clearly.

To avoid a repeat, Vowles emphasized that instructions must now be concise and unambiguous. He noted that race engineers often repeat what they’re told, so commands like “do not overtake” must be direct and simple.

He assured that with streamlined communication protocols and better coordination, such miscommunications will not happen again, especially as the team continues its improved performance this season.
