Max Verstappen delivered a brilliant drive at Monza on Sunday, winning the Italian Grand Prix from pole position and slowing McLaren’s season-long stranglehold on Formula One. The reigning world champion, who set the fastest lap in F1 history during qualifying, held off challenges from Lando Norris and championship leader Oscar Piastri to secure his third victory of the campaign.
Despite the triumph, Verstappen remains a long shot for the drivers’ title, trailing Piastri by 94 points. The Australian extended his overall lead by finishing third, keeping a 31-point advantage over McLaren teammate Norris, who crossed the line in second. The top five drivers all finished in the same order in which they started, reflecting the sheer pace of the race.
The win marked Verstappen’s second Italian success of the year, having also taken the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in May. It capped a memorable weekend for the Dutchman, who continues to show flashes of dominance even in a season largely controlled by McLaren, winners of all but four races so far.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc could not deliver a podium for the passionate home fans, finishing fourth, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton produced an impressive recovery drive. Starting 10th after a grid penalty, the seven-time world champion surged forward with daring overtakes but ultimately had to settle for sixth place behind George Russell.
As the season continues, Verstappen’s Monza masterclass was a reminder that Red Bull remain capable of challenging McLaren’s supremacy, even if the title fight appears out of reach.
