Verstappen Says He Has "Lost All Respect" for Russell After Qatar Incident

Posted : 02 December 2024

Max Verstappen has expressed his frustration with George Russell, saying he has "lost all respect" for the Mercedes driver following a penalty at the Qatar Grand Prix. The incident occurred during qualifying, where Verstappen was given a one-place grid penalty for impeding Russell by driving too slowly. This penalty dropped the world champion's Red Bull from pole position, putting Russell ahead of him on the grid.

Verstappen was particularly upset with Russell’s actions during their meeting with the stewards. He described the experience as disappointing and surprising, noting that he had never witnessed such behavior in the stewards’ room. The two-time world champion felt that Russell had been trying to sabotage him in a way that went against the respect typically shown between drivers.

In an interview with Dutch TV station Viaplay, Verstappen criticized Russell for his behavior outside of public appearances. He accused Russell of being two-faced, acting polite in front of cameras but showing a different side when interacting personally. Verstappen made it clear that he could not tolerate this and would prefer to have nothing to do with the Mercedes driver moving forward.

Despite the tension, Verstappen went on to win the race, while Russell finished fourth. Although Russell was not asked about the incident immediately after the race due to the timing of interviews, sources close to him suggested that there was more to the story. He is expected to address the situation when he speaks to the media on Thursday, ahead of the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi.
