Max Verstappen’s return to winning form will face another major challenge this weekend when Formula 1 moves from Malaysia to Singapore for the latest round of the season. The Red Bull driver ended his long wait for a victory by winning at Sepang, but the demanding Marina Bay Street Circuit presents a very different test.
Verstappen dominated the Malaysian Grand Prix to claim his first victory of 2026, with a floor upgrade helping Red Bull unlock stronger performance from its new-generation car. The race itself was unusually chaotic, with a lengthy delay after several cars encountered problems during the formation lap because of a software issue linked to wet-weather settings.
Singapore could prove considerably more demanding. Verstappen has never won at Marina Bay, while the circuit’s tight corners and limited overtaking opportunities make qualifying and race strategy particularly important. The tropical conditions also place a significant physical burden on drivers, with high heat and humidity making the 62-lap night race one of the toughest events on the calendar.
Weather could add another layer of uncertainty, with thunderstorms potentially affecting the Sprint, qualifying and Sunday’s Grand Prix. The 2026 event is also a Sprint weekend, meaning drivers have just one practice session before competitive action begins.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli will be among Verstappen’s biggest rivals after finishing second in Malaysia. The Mercedes driver extended his advantage over teammate George Russell, who suffered another power-unit failure while running third with only five laps remaining.
Lewis Hamilton will also arrive with confidence after producing a strong recovery drive in Malaysia. The Ferrari driver fought back from 18th place to finish on the podium and has an impressive record in Singapore, having won the race four times.
Russell, meanwhile, will look to defend his Singapore crown after winning last year’s race ahead of Verstappen and Lando Norris. With Verstappen chasing a first victory at Marina Bay and the championship battle intensifying, the Singapore weekend promises another demanding test for Red Bull.
