The 2025 Formula One season took a dramatic turn at the Austrian Grand Prix, as Max Verstappen suffered his first retirement of the year following a first-lap collision with Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli. The incident ended a long-standing points streak for the Red Bull star and stunned the home crowd at the Red Bull Ring.
Max Verstappen’s hopes for another strong showing at the Austrian Grand Prix were dashed almost immediately when he was forced to retire after a collision at Turn Three with Kimi Antonelli. Starting from seventh on the grid, Verstappen was looking to extend his success at a circuit where he holds the record for most wins. However, contact from Antonelli, who had started ninth, sent both drivers out of the race in a dramatic start that saw the safety car deployed.
The incident marked Verstappen’s first failure to finish a race this season and brought an end to his impressive run of 31 consecutive races in the points. Expressing his frustration over the team radio, Verstappen said, “I'm out, I got hit like crazy,” while Antonelli admitted fault, telling his team, “Sorry about that, I locked the rear.” The crash was a major disappointment for the Dutch driver's legion of fans, many of whom had turned the Red Bull Ring orange in support of their hero.
Adding to the chaos at the start, Carlos Sainz’s car encountered a technical issue before the formation lap. The Williams driver was unable to get off the grid on time, eventually returning to the pit lane. His misfortune continued when his car’s brakes overheated and caught fire, leading to a dramatic scene as mechanics rushed to extinguish the flames. Sainz was also forced to retire before completing a single racing lap.
Verstappen, who came into the weekend third in the championship standings, now faces added pressure in the title race. The early exit at a track that has typically brought him success underscores the unpredictable nature of the sport—even for seasoned champions.
