Toyota GR Cup launches Hot Seat initiative

Posted : 19 May 2026

Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa has added a new twist to its GR Cup series with the introduction of the GR Cup Hot Seat initiative, designed to bring media personalities and digital creators into real circuit racing.

The new programme will see selected South African figures step out of their usual roles in studios, simulators, and online platforms to experience the intensity of competitive racing behind the wheel of the GR Yaris AT. The aim is to give participants a hands-on taste of professional motorsport under race conditions.

At this weekend’s event at Zwartkops Raceway, content creator and sim racer Girlie Lukhele will become the first participant to take on the Hot Seat challenge in a full competitive race environment. Lukhele, who also competes in rookie rally events, says she is eager to adapt her skills to circuit racing and aims to challenge for strong results despite limited experience on track.

SuperSport commentator Nabil Abdool praised the initiative, saying it reflects the forward-thinking approach of the GR Cup platform. He noted that it is helping open doors for motorsport enthusiasts from different backgrounds while expanding the reach of racing in South Africa.

The broader GR Cup Media Championship remains tightly contested heading into Round 3. Abdool currently leads the standings with 28 points after a consistent start to the season, while News24’s Nicholson sits second on 19 points and remains a strong challenger due to his previous racing experience.

Behind them, Justin Ford and Kumbi Mtshakazi are locked on 12 points each, setting up a close midfield battle. Ford has impressed with steady performances, while Mtshakazi’s aggressive driving style has already delivered a podium finish, making him a potential threat at the technical Pretoria circuit.

Further back, Tayedza Mbiri holds fifth place on eight points after a mixed run of results. A strong second-place finish at Killarney showed early promise, but a crash and mechanical issues in later rounds have stalled his momentum. He will be aiming for a recovery this weekend, with Naresh Maharaj just one point behind.

With senior Toyota executives expected to attend at Zwartkops, pressure will be high across the paddock. Abdool noted that performing well at Toyota’s home venue would carry extra significance for all competitors as the championship intensifies.
