Toto Wolff Slams Rivals Over Mercedes Engine Controversy

Posted : 04 February 2026

Mercedes Formula One team principal Toto Wolff strongly criticised rival teams on Monday for questioning the legality of his squad’s new engine through secret meetings and letters. The comments come as F1 enters a new technical era, marked by one of the most significant regulation overhauls in decades.

The controversy centers on speculation that Mercedes and Red Bull, which now produces its own engines, may be exploiting a loophole in the rules related to the thermal expansion of engine components. If true, this could disadvantage Ferrari-powered teams—including Ferrari, Cadillac, and Haas—along with Audi and Aston Martin (Honda). Mercedes supplies engines to four teams, while Red Bull provides power units to Racing Point.

Wolff dismissed the concerns, calling them unnecessary distractions. “I just don’t understand that some teams concentrate more on others and keep arguing a case that is very clear and transparent,” he said ahead of Mercedes’ online season launch. “Communication with the FIA was very positive all along. It’s very clear what the regulations say and what the standard procedures are for any motors, even outside F1.”

The Austrian added that rivals should focus on their own preparations instead of pursuing “secret meetings and sending secret letters” or inventing new testing methods that do not exist. “Maybe you want to find excuses before you even start the season, why things are not good... it’s not how we would do things,” Wolff said.

Formula One’s governing body has downplayed the dispute, suggesting it is unlikely to spark a formal protest that could overshadow the season-opener in Australia on March 8. Wolff also highlighted that initial shakedown tests involving 10 of the 11 teams indicate the performance gaps are smaller than some feared. “In terms of pure performance on a lap, and even over several laps, it’s looked like there is no one that is really collapsing,” he said.

Mercedes dominated the last engine era, beginning in 2014, winning eight consecutive constructors’ titles with a record-breaking power unit. Wolff’s remarks underscore the team’s confidence as F1 enters this new technical chapter, despite ongoing speculation from rival teams.
