Kimi Antonelli Dominates Chaos-Filled Monaco GP to Extend Championship Lead

Posted : 07 June 2026

Teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli delivered a flawless performance to win a dramatic and interruption-filled Monaco Grand Prix, strengthening his grip on the Formula 1 world championship and finishing ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

The 19-year-old Mercedes driver controlled the race from the front and crossed the line 6.271 seconds clear of Hamilton after a chaotic afternoon marked by crashes, penalties and multiple retirements. The victory marked his fifth consecutive win of the season, making him the first Italian driver since Alberto Ascari in 1952 to achieve such a streak, and extended his championship lead to 66 points over Hamilton.

Antonelli, who became the youngest-ever pole sitter in Monaco, made a perfect start and quickly built a comfortable advantage in clean air. By lap 10, he was already more than five seconds ahead, showcasing strong pace and composure throughout the race.

Behind him, drama unfolded almost immediately as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen suffered a power unit failure at the start and retired on the opening lap, marking another early exit in Monaco’s unforgiving street circuit. World champion Lando Norris also failed to finish after encountering battery issues with his McLaren later in the race.

Hamilton’s challenge was further complicated by a pit-lane speeding penalty, though he recovered well to secure second place and equal Ayrton Senna’s record of eight Monaco podium finishes. The race featured multiple interruptions, including crashes that triggered safety cars and a red flag stoppage.

One of the key incidents came when Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc crashed at the same corner where earlier incidents had already disrupted the race, adding to the list of retirements in a chaotic afternoon.

As the race restarted after a lengthy delay, Antonelli remained composed, holding off Hamilton and maintaining control at the front. Behind them, further penalties reshuffled the order, allowing Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar to finish on the podium ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, while Racing Bulls drivers Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad both achieved career-best results.

Despite the pressure and interruptions, Antonelli managed the final restart with maturity beyond his years, sealing a memorable victory that further establishes him as the standout driver of the season.
